Abstract | ||
Background: type 2 diabetes (DM2)is associated with high risk of microvascular and macrovascular comorbidities. Many micronutrients are involved in combating DM and its complication. Aim of the study: To investigate the effects of Folic acid in albino rats model of DM2. Materials and Methods: Thirty male adult albino rats were divided randomly into 3 groups control, diabetes mellitus (DM2): DM2 was induced by 4 weeks of high fat diet then streptozotocin (25 mg/kg/ i.p, once), and Folic acid-treated DM2 with (5mg/kg b.w) orally for 8 weeks. Serum glucose, Insulin, Lipid profile, CRP were analyzed, HOMA-IR, and plasma atherogenic Index (AIP) were calculated. Results: In Folic acid-treated DM2 group, there was a significant decrease in serum glucose, HOMA-IR, cholesterol, triglyceride, AIP, CRP with significant increase in serum insulin and high density lipoprotein when compared to DM2 group. Conclusion: Use of folic acid was effective in a rat model of DM which is owed to its reducing gluco-metabolic disturbances, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory roles. Key words: Folic acid, Diabetes mellitus type 2. | ||
