Abstract | ||||
The present work aims to prepare antimicrobial rubber for safety toys industry. Natural and some synthetic rubber were investigated for this study. Rubber and their ingredients as well as natural product applied antimicrobial agent such as nanocurcum were mixed at the ordinary rubber mixer. The rheological characteristics of compounded rubber were measured and the curing time was determined. The compounded rubber was vulcanized in a hydraulic press at specified temperature and estimated cure time. The physic-mechanical properties were evaluated. The scanning electron micrographs illustrated surface homogeneity of vulcanizate sample that demonstrate good compatibility and dispersion of the material inside rubber chains. The rheological characteristics of natural rubber vulcanizates was good and show no significant change in the presence of tested natural product drug (nanocrucum). Also, the physico-mechanical properties as tensile strength and elongation are increased in the presence of nanocrucum depending on its nature and concentration. The same observation was obtained for styrene butadiene rubber and EPDM vulcanizates under investigation. The cytotoxicity of the prepared vulcanizates towards human normal retina cell line (RPI-1) indicated the safety properties of the prepared vulcanizates. On the other hand, the prepared nanocurcum rubber vulcanizates showed moderate antimicrobial potency towards tested bacteria and fungi strains, also cause inhibition in their growth . | ||||
