Abstract | ||||
This research project aims to examine the persuasive use of language in the Arabic literary novel "Yacoubian Building" by Alaa Al Aswany, as well as its English translation. The focus of the study is on the characters' utilization of plea-like language to effectively convince others to adopt specific beliefs or engage in particular actions. The use of persuasive language is particularly evident in the political themes of the novel, which deal with corruption and social injustice in Egypt. It’s important to note that the English translator faced many obstacles in his attempts to render plea expressions from English into Arabic because so many of them are culture-specific and may not always accurately convey the meaning of the original Arabic text if translated literally, which can affect the interpretation of the persuasive language used in the novel. Therefore, the researcher paid much attention to analyzing the use of persuasive language in “Yacoubian Building” and its English translation. The study finds that the vocative and imperative forms of plea expressions are the most common in both languages. The use of plea expressions in the novel reflects the social and political context of Egyptian society, and the English translation effectively conveys the meaning and intent of the original Arabic text. Additionally, the study notes that the use of plea expressions in the novel contributes to the overall themes and messages of the work, highlighting the significance of understanding the nuances of language and context when analyzing and translating such expressions. | ||||
