Abstract | ||||
The main objective of this paper is to examine the lexical translation loss that occurs in the Arabic versions of some English animated films. It focuses on characterizing certain translational implications based on the lexical differences between the two languages, giving examples of English as the source language and Modern Standard Arabic as the target language. A qualitative analysis is adopted to investigate the scripts of three English animated films and their three Arabic dubbed versions. These films are Brave 2012, Inside Out 2015 and Onward 2020. The findings of the study show that there are four factors that cause lexical translation loss in the selected animated movies. These are omission, synonymy, hyperonymy-hyponymy, and phrasal verbs and collocations. The statistical examination of the data shows that the largest percentage of lexical translation loss is caused by hyperonymy-hyponymy, followed by omission, then phrasal verbs and collocation. The smallest percentage of lexical translation loss is ascribed to synonymy. At the end, the researcher advised translators to take into consideration the factors causing lexical translation loss that are identified in the study. | ||||
