Abstract | ||||
The purpose of the study is to investigate the fundamental principles, sustainability impacts, and implementation challenges associated with the 15-minute city concept. We demonstrate its reliance on seven core principles: human-scale urban design, density, diversity, flexibility, proximity, digitalization, and connectivity. to contribute to sustainability across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Nevertheless, critiques have emerged, highlighting the 15-minute city perceived physical determinism and its purported neglect of diverse social group needs, biodiversity, energy efficiency, clean energy, as well as cultural and heritage considerations. Until now, 15-minute cities have shown some positive results in many cities around the world. Studies and experiments indicate some benefits and positive effects achieved by this idea, such as improving the quality of life and encouraging residents to use sustainable transportation, which reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions, and also improving the general health of the population by encouraging people to walk and ride bicycles. This can contribute to improving physical fitness. Special Issue of AEIC 2024 (Sustainable Architecture and Urban Design Session) | ||||
