Abstract | ||||
Abstract Background: Chronic ulcer is a chronic wound that shows no tendency to heal after 3 months of appropriate treatment or is still not fully healed at 12 months. Ulcers of skin can result in complete loss of the epidermis and often portions of the dermis and even subcutaneous fat. Chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers show impairment of proliferation and migration of keratinocytes into the wound, which result in delayed epithelization. Aim: To study epidemiology of chronic leg ulcers. Patients and methods: This was a prospective randomized study that has been conducted on 40 patients with chronic leg ulcer diagnosed and following in the outpatient clinic of Dermatology, Andrology and STDs department and Vascular Surgery department, Minia university hospital in the period from March 2022 to March 2023. Results: Age ranged from 32-62 years, number of males was 26 and 14 females, BMI ranged from 25 : 31. 18 live in Urban and 22 in Rural, 21were smokers and 19 non smokers .ulcer duration ranged from 5-48 weeks. Regarding type of ulcer, 18 patient have Varicose vein, 17diabetic foot and 5 Pressure ulcer . Conclusion: An ulcer which is present for more than three months is considered as chronic ulcer. The majority of chronic leg ulcers are caused by venous insufficiency followed by diabetic ulcers then pressure ulcers. the improvement of Chronic leg ulcers not affected by the gender, smoking or BMI. | ||||
