Abstract | ||||
The appropriate administration of pharmacological agent to animals requires a detailed understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. This is because the clinical dosage regimen depends on how the body act on the drug and its dosage formulation (pharmacokinetics) as well as the safety and efficacy of the drug (pharmacodynamics). Dosage regimens are designed to achieve therapeutic concentrations and maintain a therapeutic response, while minimizing adverse side effects, expense, and promotion of antimicrobial resistance. This brief review has 2 main objectives: 1) to present an overview of the basic processes of drug absorption, distribution and elimination and how these processes are quantified using different pharmacokinetic approaches; and 2) to identify computer software programs and web sites that are useful resources for veterinarians interested in clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics. | ||||
