Abstract | ||||
This research explores the exploitative nature of entertainment that thrives on human vulnerability by analyzing Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy through the lens of the "algorithmic gaze" and the "commodification of suffering." The trilogy depicts a dystopian society, Panem, where the ruling Capitol organizes annual Games as entertainment, flourishing on the suffering of tributes, especially those young adult agents. By analyzing the role of media broadcasts, and manipulative tactics within the Games, the research demonstrates how the Capitol commodifies the suffering of tributes for entertainment value. The "algorithmic gaze" concept is employed to analyze how citizens in Panem are monitored through surveillance, further reinforcing societal inequalities. This study utilizes critical media studies and theories of the "algorithmic gaze" to explore how Panem's entertainment culture exploits human vulnerability. It also delves into the "commodification of suffering" concept to analyze how the Games transform human suffering into a consumable spectacle. Characters like Katniss Everdeen challenge the commodification of suffering through acts of rebellion and dissent, highlighting the limitations of the "algorithmic gaze." Moreover, it sheds light on the broader implications of the "algorithmic gaze" and the commodification of suffering in contemporary societies. Parallels between Panem's entertainment culture and reality TV, social media, and the exploitation of vulnerability in the real world are explored, prompting a critical reflection on our media consumption habits. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the exploitation of vulnerability in media and entertainment, offering valuable insights into contemporary cultural practices and societal norms. | ||||
