| Abstract | ||||
| Background: Pre -marital screening helps detecting potential health problems and risks for couples and also their offspring. Premarital counseling generally refers to a process designed to enhance premarital relationships leading to stable marriages and to more satisfaction Aim: To assess the awareness and attitude of university students towards premarital screening and counseling at Aswan University. Design: A descriptive cross sectional research design. Setting: This study was conducted at four randomly selected Faculties at Aswan University these faculties are (Social work, Colleges of Arts, Science, and Agriculture). Sample: A purposive sample of 310 of students at level fourth at Aswan University was recruited in this study. Tools: Two tools; Tool I: Self-administrated questionnaire sheet which involving two parts: part 1: personal characteristics of students, part 2: Students awareness assessment questionnaire Tool II: Attitude Assessment Scale. Results: 55.5% of the studied students aged ≥20 years, 57.7% of them were females, 61.6% of them were from rural and 39.3% of them had secondary education. Also, 47.1% of the studied students had poor knowledge level and 61.3% of the studied students had positive attitude regarding pre-marital screening and counseling. Conclusion: there was statistical significant relation between total levels of studied students' knowledge regarding premarital examination with engagement status and fathers' occupation. Additionally, there was statistical significant relation between total attitude level of the studied students regarding premarital screening and counseling with their age, faculty and residence. Moreover, there was statistical significant correlation (P=0.028) between the total students' awareness and their total attitude regarding premarital screening and counseling. Recommendations: Creating an educational initiative to inform university students about premarital counseling. A pamphlet detailing premarital screening locations and services should be distributed by university services | ||||
