Abstract | ||||
Background: Speech sound problems are difficulties in perceiving, producing, or mentally processing speech sounds, as well as understanding the rules for how sounds can be paired in a language. Speech sound problems can impede the development of important literacy abilities, such as reading and spelling, as well as the ability to engage effectively with classmates and teachers. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of speech sound problems on children's learning abilities. Patients and Methods: Sixty children with speech sound disorders, ranging in age from 5 years and 6 months to 7 years and 5 months, were recruited from the phoniatrics unit. All participants underwent a comprehensive assessment, which included a detailed medical history, language testing, articulation evaluations, audiological examinations, intelligence scale testing, and phonological awareness assessments. Results: Our findings showed difficulties in rhyming, segmenting, isolating, deleting, and substituting syllables, words, and sentences. Furthermore, learning impairments were more pronounced in children with phonological errors. The majority of children with SSD in our study performed below the 5th percentile on phonological awareness tests. Conclusion: Children with speech sound disorders, particularly the phonological type, often experience delayed academic progress and display learning disabilities. It is crucial to diagnose and intervene in these cases as early as possible, ideally without delay. | ||||
