Abstract | ||||
Abstract The growing popularity who lives on diets that are low in carbohydrates and high in fats are predisposed to thyroid dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the possible effect of long-term use of low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) Keto diet (KD) for two consecutive months on the thyroid gland structure and function. 20 adult male albino rats were randomized into two equal groups: control group (received the standard laboratory diet) and KD group (received 30 gm of mixed, frozen and pulverized pellets including 1% carb., 89% fats and 10% protein). Both were given the diets daily for two consecutive months. Serum was used for hormonal analysis and thyroid glands were carefully dissected and processed for histological examination using H&E stain. Biochemical analysis of KD group revealed low serum T3 & T4 levels and higher TSH levels if compared to that of control group. Histological results showed disorganization and abnormal forms of widely separated thyroid follicles, damaged follicular and parafollicular cells and congested blood vessels. It was suggested the potential harmful effect of KD on the thyroid gland structure and function. | ||||
