Abstract | ||||
Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of double diabetes (DD) among type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients in Benha city, Egypt, and to evaluate the clinical and metabolic differences between DD and typical DM. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 528 patients who attended Benha University Hospital between July 2023 and January 2024. Group I consisted of 435 type 2 DM patients aged >40 years, while Group II included 93 type 1 DM patients aged 2.5) in type 1 DM patients. Results: The prevalence of DD was 13.6% (59/435) in type 2 DM patients and 25.8% (24/93) in type 1 DM patients. In Group I, DD patients were younger (59.5 vs. 60.1 years, p=0.569), had lower BMI (24.9 vs. 28.9 kg/m², p < 0.001), and higher prevalence of autoimmune disease family history (40.7% vs. 9%, p < 0.001) compared to typical type 2 DM patients. In Group II, DD patients were older (14.3 vs. 12.9 years, p=0.005), with higher BMI (23.8 vs. 16.3 kg/m², p < 0.001) and waist circumference (73.6 vs. 62.5 cm, p < 0.001) compared to typical type 1 DM patients. DD patients in both groups exhibited higher HbA1c levels (Group I: 9.05% vs. 8.09%, p < 0.001; Group II: 10.7% vs. 8.04%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Double diabetes is prevalent among both type 1 and type 2 DM patients, with distinct clinical and metabolic profiles. | ||||
