Abstract | ||||
Abstract: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate kind, origin, and intensity of headaches experienced by patients scheduled for nasal surgery at Minia University Hospital between January 2023 and January 2024 for bilateral chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, deviated septum. A total of 33 people, 11 men and 22 females, ranging in age from 15 to 49 years old, were enrolled in the study. Patients in this study filled out a headache assessment and medical history questionnaire. Results: After complete otolaryngological and neurological evaluation of all patients with deviated septum and bilateral chronic hypertrophic rhinitis (CHR) indicated for nasal surgery, the majority of cases (23 patients) were diagnosed as primary headaches (69.7%) and only 10 cases (30.3%) had non-primary headaches. Out of 23 cases with primary headache, 18 cases had migraine (78.3%) and 5 cases had tension headache (21.7%). As regard severity of headache, 14 cases (42.4%) had severe headaches, followed by 13 cases (39.4%) had mild headache, then 4 cases (12.1%) diagnosed with moderate headache, while only 2 cases (6.1%) had very severe headache. Conclusion: Patients indicated for nasal surgery should undergo comprehensive neurological and otolaryngological evaluation of headaches before surgery. This is because a high percentage of these patients suffer from primary headaches, and complete resolution of headaches after surgery is not guaranteed.
