Abstract | ||||
This study was conducted in Al-Sharkia and El-Fayoum provinces, Egypt, and aimed to analyze the business models of rural Egyptian broiler farming families and determine their value chain mapping. One hundred and fifty individual small-scale broiler farmers were randomly selected from both provinces using a stratified random sampling technique. A pretested structured questionnaire was used for monthly direct interviews, and direct farm-level observation was used to gather data. Results indicated that there were three different business models for Egyptian rural families' broiler chicks. These include traditional backyard, micro‐franchising, and microfinancing models. The microfinancing model was the highest model in flock size mean (200 chick), chicks' body weight (41.60 g), and final body weight per chick (2.30 kg), and lowest in total feed intake (10736.3 g), production period length (45 days), and mortality rate/household (11%). The traditional backyard model makes a net supplemental income (163.80 LE/chick/360 days) as a result of the adoption of new business models like micro‐franchising and microfinancing models from meat revenues of 186.85 and 232.30 LE/chick/180 day and 45 days respectively (6.22 and 7.74 USD). Therefore, for sustainable increasing viability of broiler meat for food security and economic profits, traditional backyard broiler production systems must be improved to modern business models. | ||||
