Abstract | ||||
Weak immunity is a health problem that has become more prevalent due to increased consumption of processed foods and a fast-paced lifestyle. Consuming beetroot or guava juice as part of diet therapy has been found to have beneficial effects in improving the immune system. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the potential role of beetroot and guava juice mixture as a functional food on immunocompromised rats. Group 1: Negative control group was fed on basal diet and injected intraperitoneally (IP) once every 3 days with 0.2 ml saline. Group 2: Cisplatin group was fed a basal diet and IP with cisplatin (3.5 mg/kg) once every 3 days for 2 consecutive weeks to induce immune dysfunction. Groups 3 and 4: As group 2 and rats were fed on basal diet, IP with cisplatin (3.5 mg/kg) once every 3 days for 2 consecutive weeks and given 1 ml/rat/day of beetroot juice, guava juice respectively. Group 5: As group 2 and was fed on basal diet and given 1 ml/rat/day of beetroot and guava juice orally at the ratio (1:1). Results showed that IP injection of cisplatin to rats caused a significant (P<0.05) reduction in body weight, serum levels of immunogolobulins (IgG and IgM), total protein, albumin, globulin, leukocyte, neutrophils, whereas lymphocyte and monocyte significantly increased as compared to the negative control group. On the other hand, oral administration of beetroot and/or guava juice significantly attenuated (P<0.05) these adverse effects and markedly ameliorated biochemical alterations that caused by cisplatin injection. In conclusion, beetroot and guava juice stimulate the immune system of rats with cisplatin-induced suppressed immunity. So, patients with immune disorders have to consume combination of beetroot and guava juice. | ||||
