Abstract | ||||
Background: In this case report we have a patient with an implanted permanent pacemaker for a non cardiac surgery, we discuss in brief about implantable electronic devices and the techniques used to minimize the risk of perioperative cardiac events. Case Presentation: A 66 year old hypertensive lady with a permanent pacemaker implanted as a treatment for AV block. Her effort tolerance was adequate and blood tests were within normal limits. Pacemaker settings were appropriately changed prior to procedure. Standard ASA monitors including continuous ECG monitoring, pulse oximetry, and arterial blood pressure monitoring was applied. General anesthesia was administered to this patient and intraoperative period was uneventful. Pacemaker settings were changed back to original postoperatively. Postoperative period was uneventful. She was discharged after 5 days of hospital stay. Conclusions: A thorough history and examination along with basic knowledge about functioning of implantable cardiac devices will enable a safe conduct of anesthesia. | ||||
