| Abstract | ||||
| Background: Convulsion represents additional burden to mothers of children with cerebral palsy that can be prevented through adherence to anticonvulsant medications. Poor medication adherence is significant healthcare problem leading to suboptimal health outcomes. Aim: The current study aims to assess the relation between recurrent convulsions among children with cerebral palsy and their mothers' perception regarding adherence to anticonvulsant medications. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized. Setting: Neurological department, Pediatric Hospital of Tanta main University Hospital and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Kafr El-Sheikh Main University Hospital. Subjects: A Purposive sampling of (90) mothers and their children with cerebral palsy. Tools: Tool I: Cerebral Palsy and Anticonvulsant Medication Questionnaire. Tool II: Mothers' Practices regarding Cerebral Palsy & Recurrent Convulsions. Tool (III): Mothers‘ Attitude about Anticonvulsant Medications Adherence and Tool (IV) Anticonvulsants Medications Adherence. Results: Nearly two thirds of the mothers (63.3%) had low level of total knowledge and 82.2% of them had a negative attitude toward anticonvulsant medication. Less than three quarters of the mothers (70%) had low level of adherence to anticonvulsant medications. Highly statistically significant negative correlations were noticed between recurrence of convulsions and mothers' knowledge, practice, attitude and adherence to anticonvulsant medication. Conclusion: The studied mothers had low level of knowledge, unsatisfactory reported practice and negative attitude regarding adherence to anticonvulsants medications.
