Abstract | ||||
Background: Cryptosporidiosis is a common enteric infection in low-income countries that affects mainly childrens causing severe diarrhea. Several antibiotics such as paromomycin, nitazoxanide and azithromycin have activity against cryptosporidiosis. Linezolid has a promising chance in treatment of human cryptosporidiosis. Nanomedicine developments appear promising in the treatment of cryptosporidiosis. Purpose: this work aims to evaluate the efficacy of linezolid either alone or loaded on chitosan nanoparticles on cryptosporidium parvum in experimentally infected mice. Methods: Cryptosporidium oocysts were obtained by collection of stools from naturally infected calves Nitazoxanide NTZ (100 mg/kg) and linezolid (Averozolid (20mg/kg)) either alone or loaded on chitosan nano particles (CNP)- were given to the selected mice. Evaluation of drugs effect by parasitological, histopathological and serological effect. Results: Nitazoxanide treated group show the highest reduction of oocysts number followed by the studied treated group with linezolid loaded on chitosan nanoparticles followed by group treated with linezolid alone, then group treated with chitosan nanoparticles, showing the following results (73%) 55.2%) (29.7%) (25.4%) respectively. The highest level of serum IL was recorded in positive control group (G2) for IL-4 (106.6±0.41) and IL10(151.5±0.9), NTZ treated group achieved the highest reduction in serum IL4&IL10 level among treated groups (34.7±0.50) and (54.6±0.4) respectively, followed by the studied group treated with linezolid loaded on chitosan nanoparticles (64.5±0.40 ) and (87.5±0.5 )respectively. Histopathological examination: the studied groups showed mild to moderate intestinal &lung changes.Conclusion: linezolid (either alone or loaded on chitosan nanoparticles) appears to be more effective and might be a good choice for treating cryptosporidiosis | ||||
