Vitamin C and B12 pretreatment boost the prophylactic mechanism of UVC-induced cardiomyopathy in male rats | ||||

Abstract | ||||
UVC-irradiated lamps are widely used in indoor designs and could induce cardiotoxicity as environmental poison. On the other hand, comprehensive studies have established the capability of vitamins to alleviate organ toxicity. In this study, male rats were allocated pretreatment with vitamin C and B12 for two months and then exposed to low, medium, and high levels of UVC irradiation for two weeks. The findings showed that UVC-irradiation induces cardiac inflammation denoted by significant elevation of TNF-α, IL-1β, iNOS, and IDO in male rat hearts. In addition, UVC-irradiation causes a significant elevation of cardiac creatine kinase compared to control. Antioxidant enzymes were used to detect various oxidative stress disorders, and a significant depletion of antioxidant enzymes was observed in the UVC-irradiated groups with significantly increased MDA. Likewise, histopathological findings demonstrated that UVC irradiation disturbed the architectures of cardiomyocytes. The observed findings revealed that pretreatment with Vitamin C and B12 significantly inhibited the inflammatory parameters and boosted the prophylactic potency inducing more significant ameliorative effects. Additionally, the pretreatment with Vitamin C and B12 dramatically enhanced antioxidant enzymes. However, the impact of vitamin B12 surpasses that of vitamin C in UVC-induced cardiotoxicity compared to the control group. The study indicates that pretreatment with Vitamin C and B12 may act as a prophylactic approach to address multiple organ disorders. | ||||
