Abstract | ||||
In this study the insecticidal efficacy of two chemical insecticides (deltamethrin and malathion) and one inert dust diatomaceous earth (DE) was investigated against an important insect of stored grain, Rhyzopertha dominica. Mortality percentages and progeny development inhibition of R. dominica adults were evaluated. In addition, the residual activity and the impact of the selected insecticides on wheat grain quality were also determined. Results showed that diatomaceous earth had the greatest action compared to malathion and deltamethrin at all exposure periods. After six days DE had LC50 values of 0.04 mg/kg grain compared with deltamethrin and malathion with LC50 values of 1.03 and 24.42 mg/kg grain, respectively. For progeny production deltamethrin was the best insecticides compared to malathion and DE against R. dominica. At the highest concentration, deltamethrin gave a 100% reduction. For residual activity, del-tamethrin was the premier agent compared with malathion and DE. The three tested materials decreased the carbohydrate content. Also, malathion and DE increased protein content while, deltamethrin decreased protein content. Diatomaceous earth could be a safe alternative for chemical insecticides during the stored product insect control. | ||||
