Abstract | ||||
The clavicle is one of the most broken bones in the human body, accounting for 5% to 10% of all fractures seen in hospital emergency admissions. There are several methodologies and techniques for managing midshaft clavicle fractures. These managements can broadly be categorized into non-operative and operative. Aim: To assess the functional outcomes of conservative and operative treatment of acute midclavicular fractures at Mansoura Emergency Hospital as regard clinical and radiographic results. Methods: This randomized control study included 120 patients randomly divided according to method of treatment into 2 groups, conservative group and operative group. The cases were followed up to determine the degree of functional improvement using Constant score and DASH score. In addition, Plain X-rays were conducted at follow up. The complications were reported in each of the two groups. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the CONSTANT score during the duration of follow-up, with better scores reported in the operative group except at 1 year follow up. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the DASH score along the duration of follow-up, with the score being higher in the conservative group. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the overall incidence of complications. we concluded that both conservative and operative groups showed comparable outcomes regarding the functional improvement after midclavicular shaft fractures. As regarding patient reported outcomes, The degree of satisfaction was higher in the operative group despite having higher incidence of complications. | ||||
