Abstract | ||||
Background: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is reversible syndrome that can occur in individuals with advanced liver dysfunction. It was noticed during clinical practice that nurses had insufficient level of knowledge and unsatisfactory level of performance during caring of patients with Hepatic encephalopathy. Purpose: assess the effect of educational program about hepatic encephalopathy on nurse’s knowledge and practice. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized for this study. Setting: This study carried out in National liver institute at Shebin El-Kom. Sampling: A convenient sample of 70 nurses who work in the above-mentioned setting. Instruments: Two instruments: (A structured interview questionnaire about nurse's demographic characteristics and knowledge and an observational checklist). Results: The current study revealed that there was highly statistically significance improvement of nurses’ knowledge post educational program 46.06 ± 2.31. Vs 23.53 ± 2.52 pre educational practice). Total mean score of nurses’ performance was 458.02 ± 20.46 post implementation of educational program, while pre implementation of educational program was 184.80 ± 24.57. Conclusions: Based on the present study results there was a beneficial effects of educational program on nurses' knowledge and practices about patient with hepatic encephalopathy. Recommendations: Continuous education for nurses is needed to promote development of knowledge and practice and improve quality of care for patients. | ||||
