Abstract | ||||
Background: The anterior cruciate ligament injury represents a critical disorder that needs good management including handling of the patients' perspectives and beliefs. Purpose: To investigate the patients’ clinical perspectives and beliefs after ACL surgery and rehabilitation in Egypt. Methods: A total of 170 participants with ACL reconstruction (ACLR) (112 male and 58 female). Participant’s ages ranged from 20 - 29 years old and most of them (about 98%) were unilateral. The sample involved athletes in different sports (Football, Basketball and volleyball) (about 30%) or non-athletes (about 70%) with no associated knee injuries in the last two years. The survey consisted of a combination of open- and closed-ended questions regarding the patients' demographic characteristics (Q1-7), surgery and rehabilitation information (Q8-24), and personal perspectives (Q25- 28). Results: About (95.3%) of patients are afraid of the recurrence of the injury for the second time and 61.1% go to physical therapy (PT) within the first month after surgery. A percentage of 44.6% of patients receive PT sessions in a private clinic and 91.2% of them are rehabilitated by a physiotherapist. Furthermore, the surgeon is the dominant factor in the RTS decision (47.6%). Conclusions: The study revealed different factors determining the mechanism of injury, and time represented the most influencing factor in seeking rehabilitation. Additionally, majority of cases stayed at hospital one day after surgery and most of them received to some extent the information related to the surgical procedures and results with a higher percentage completing and following the PT instructions. | ||||
