Abstract | ||||
Background: Cardiothoracic patients' conditions is very complex, they need continuous monitoring and intensive care. Arterial line catheter is one of the common procedure that is performed toassess their hemodynamic and respiratory conditions. It is usually inserted in radial artery. The literature emphasized the importance of confirming adequate collateral circulation before insertion to reduce the potential ischemia damage of the upper extermities.Aim: This study aimed to compare between Modified Allen’s test and Barbeau test for evaluating ulnopalmar arterial arches among cardiothoracic patients.Method: Comparative crossectional research design was utilized to conduct this study among 220 patients in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit affilated at Mansoura University in Egypt. One tool was used to collect data for this study; ulnopalmararterial arches assessment tool.Results: 64.5% of the participants had a positive modified Allen’s test compared to 76.4% with a positive barbeau test with highly statistically significant difference between both tests (P ≤0.001). Mostly, patient with positive barbeau had normal physiological paramer values.Conclusion: barbeau and modified allens tests are considered efficient methods for evaluating ulnopalmar arterial arches but barbeau test is more sensitive. | ||||
