| Abstract | ||||
| Hyperhomocysteinemia has been associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid are essential components in the metabolism of homocysteine. The current study aimed to assess the effects of vitamin B6, B12, folic acid and the combination of them from supplemented and natural sources in the prevention of hyperhomocysteinemia. Sixty albino rats weighed (130 ±10 g) were used in this investigation. Rats were divided into main groups: the first group include 6 rats fed on basal diet, the second group fed on methionine and was divided into 9 subgroups treated with supplements (B6, B12 and folic acid) and food (milk, meat and cowpea). The homocysteine, heart enzymes, lipid profile, liver function, kidney function and histopathological examination of (liver, Kidney and Heart) were done. The results indicated that treatment with natural food resources (milk or meat or cowpea) and nutritional supplements containing B6, B12 and folic acid in a diet high in methionine had significant effect on reducing the level of homocysteine, heart enzymes and improving blood lipid profile as well as the histopathological impacts in liver, Kidney and Heart of the treated rats. | ||||
