Abstract | ||||
Background: Otomycosis describes a skin fungal infection of the external canal. It is a non-life threatening condition. However, it is a challenging and frustrating condition, especially for patients and otolaryngologist. This is due to the frequent need of long-term treatment and follow up. In addition, the recurrence rate remains high. The Aim of the work: To compares between Garlic oil (Allium Sativum) and Clotrimazole in otomycosis treatment. Patients and methods: A hundred patients diagnosed with otomycosis were divided into two equal groups; group (A) included 50 patients treated with Garlic oil, and group (B) included 50 patients treated with Clotrimazole. All participants were subjected to culture that confirmed the diagnosis and identified the pathogens. Study groups were compared for symptoms and signs improvement. The response to treatment in this study was observed on the third, seventh and fourteenth day after treatment. Results: The culture results revealed that, the causative organisms were Candida albicans in 54 patients, Aspergillus Niger in 32 patients, Aspergillus flavus in 6 patients and Aspergillus fumigatus in patients in 8 patients. On the fourteenth day, 38 patients received garlic oil and 45 patients received Clotrimazole had a good response to treatment, while 9 patients from garlic oil group and 4 cases from clotrimazole group had a partial response. Absent response was recorded for 3 patients in garlic oil group and 1 patient in Clotrimazole group. Conclusion: There was no significant differences in clinical response on the third, seventh and fourteenth day after treatment between two treatments groups. Thus, treatment should be individualized | ||||
