Abstract | ||||
Background: While there are numerous factors that may influence the outcome of clear aligner therapy, the material used in aligner fabrication stands out as a factor of utmost importance in determining the mechanical and clinical features. Objective: to evaluate the biomechanical effects of torquing on upper central incisor with two types of thermoplastic aligners. Materials and Methods: A total of 16 patients were recruited in the study, 8 treated with PET-G aligners and 8 with TPU aligners, Records were collected before and after treatment. Results: The findings of the current study include major differences between PET-G and TPU with regards to the movement of the incisal edge and the root apex. PET-G was associated with significant root movement (mean movement: 1.2 mm) but no notable movement in the incisal edge was seen (mean movement: -0.1 mm). In contrast, TPU was associated with almost exclusive incisal edge movement (mean movement: 2.8 mm) with the root apex movement averaging close to zero (mean movement: -0.2 mm). Hence, PET-G was significantly associated with root displacement (p-value: <0.001) while TPU was significantly associated with controlled tipping movement (p-value: <0.001). Conclusion: From our data, PET-G was evidently associated with root movement rather than crown movement. In contrast, TPU aligners induced nearly no root movement. TPU was associated with crown tipping, not root movement. Such findings can help orthodontist choose appropriate aligner material in a case by case manner to achieve a variety of required optimal tooth movements. | ||||
