Abstract | ||||
Background: Clinical preceptor is a trained registered nurse who guides and supervises students‟ clinical experience, and facilitates their learning within a clinical environment. Aims: To develop job description for the clinical preceptors at Faculty of Nursing Assiut University. Research design: Descriptive observational study design was used. Setting: This study was conducted in Faculty of Nursing Assiut University Subjects: Consisted of clinical preceptors (n=13) and academic teaching staff (n=72) in the scientific academic departments in the Faculty of Nursing. Tools: The study data collected include (1) Personal and Occupational Questionnaire, (2) Daily Diary Form, (3) Job Analysis Observation Checklist, and (4) Job Description Content Opinionnaire Form. Results: All of academic teaching staff (100%) agreed that clinical preceptors assist in applying theoretical knowledge in practice, prepare and organize clinical teaching sessions, and assist in evaluating student performance. The majority of them (85%) agreed that clinical preceptors act as observers in all student examination committees, conduct administrative rounds for internship students in the hospital, and document internship students' grades. Conclusions: Statistical significance difference between academic teaching staff opinion in different specialties about the clinical preceptors as regard all dimensions of job description except communication and collaboration, and skills and competencies dimension (p≤0.05). Recommendations: Distribute job description manual to guide preceptors in understanding their assigned responsibilities, and offer structured training to inform them about their duties and responsibilities. | ||||
