ABSTRACT Background: Multiphase zirconia is a promising material introduced in the market with a new technology integrating different generations of zirconia in one blank by combining the 3Y-TZP in the dentin zone, and the high-translucency 5Y-TZP in the incisal or occlusal area and transition zone between them. This leads to restorations with high esthetics and outstanding strength. Aim: To determine the effect of substrate color and ceramic thickness on the final color of multiphase zirconia Materials and methods: Fifty-four rectangular-shaped gradient zirconia specimens (14mm X 12mm) of different thicknesses (0.5 and 1 mm) were designed and milled using CAD/CAM. Three underlying substrates (Nickel Chromium, Composite A2, Composite A3.5) were constructed in a Teflon mold and color evaluation were performed using spectrophotometer based on CIE L* a* b* relative to the standard illumination D65.Color difference was obtained by calculating the difference in color measurements using the formula ∆E=[(∆L*)2 +(∆a*)2 +(∆b*)2] ½. Results: Mean and standard deviation values (± SD) showed there was a statistically significant difference between mean ΔE of different substrates, metal showed the statistically significantly highest mean ΔE, and there was a statistically significant difference between the different thicknesses the 1 mm thickness showed statistically significantly lower mean ΔE than 0.5 mm thickness. Conclusion: Ceramic thickness and substrate color affect the final color of the zirconia ceramic. | ||||
