Abstract | ||||
As urban agriculture gains momentum, a variety of IoT-based hydroponic control systems have emerged. However, many of these platforms suffer from a common limitation: their hardware and software are so tightly coupled that users often face significant constraints in customization. In many cases, users must resort to hacking the system to achieve the desired functionality. This underscores the need for a more flexible and user-configurable solution. To address this gap, we propose Hydro-smart, a modular and user-friendly IoT-based hydroponic control system. Hydro-smart is specifically designed for small-scale DIY enthusiasts and medium-scale urban agriculture practitioners who seek to automate and optimize their gardening or farming processes. In addition to automation, the platform facilitates agricultural experimentation and encourages knowledge sharing within the community. Given the numerous variables that influence plant growth, Hydro-smart empowers users to act as citizen scientists by simplifying experimental design and automating data collection. By removing the repetitive tasks associated with experimentation, the system enables more users to participate in scientific inquiry and contribute valuable insights. This paper reviews existing systems in the domain and presents Hydro-smart as a more open, flexible, and user-centric alternative to current IoT hydroponic solutions. | ||||
