Abstract | ||||
Background: Induction of labor at or beyond 37 weeks of gestation is associated with a clear reduction in perinatal death compared to expectant management. It also reduces cesarean section rates without increasing operative vaginal deliveries and fewer Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions. Aim and objectives: to evaluate the outcome of adding propranolol to misoprostol for induction of labor compared to misoprostol alone. Subjects and methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Minia University. A total of 160 pregnant women candidate for induction of labor for different obstetric indications were divided into two groups. Group I: include 80 patients and induced using Misoprostol preceded by placebo pills. Group II : 80 patients and induced using Misoprostol preceded by Propranolol. Result: There was statistically significant difference between studied groups regarding duration of Latent phase, duration of active phase, and induction-delivery interval. Conclusion: We concluded that Propranolol when used with misoprostol for induction of labor results in augmentation of action of misoprostol and a significantly shorter induction-delivery interval so it can be used as an adjuvant to misoprostol. | ||||
