Abstract | ||||
ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effect of sintering temperature on the phase composition and physical as well as mechanical properties of the mullite and zirconia-toughened alumina (mullite / ZTA) composites formed by using a cold isostatic press (CIP) at 300 MPa . X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical testing techniques for flexural strength, fracture toughness as well as Vickers hardness were employed to find the accurate relationship between two different sintering temperatures and sintered composite properties. The results showed that increasing the sintering temperature positively affected the bulk density. The enhancement of flexural strength and Vickers hardness with increasing sintering temperature from 1600°C to 1650°C was attributed to improvement in the physical properties (increasing bulk density and decreasing apparent porosity) of sintered composites. Also, the mullite formation with increasing sintering temperatures enhanced the fracture toughness of studied composites sintered at 1650°C compared to those sintered at 1600°C. | ||||
