| Abstract | ||||
| ABSTRACT Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a life-threatening disease. It is characterized by the reduction in glucose uptake into muscle and adipose tissue, which leads to chronic hyperglycemia and other complications. Hematological alterations are a major remarkable clinical and pathological syndrome affected with DM. Hematological changes increase the risk of complications associated with diabetic patients. Synthetic drugs are effective in controlling blood sugar but with many other side effects. To overcome this, the need for natural products, which may be used as a dietary supplement to prevent diabetic complications becomes highly wanted. Aim of work: the goal of this study was to assess the possible therapeutic potential of aqueous saffron extract (ASE) in diabetic mice by investigating some hematological parameters of different experimental groups. Material and Methods: A single dose of STZ (65 mg/kg body weight) was intraperitoneally (IP) injected to mice. Animals with fasting blood glucose over than 300 mg/dl were considered diabetic. The experimental groups were equally allocated into; (1) Control, (2) Saffron, (3) Diabetic and (4) Diabetic + saffron. After the onset of diabetes, animals were treated with oral gavage of ASE (80 mg/kg body weight) along with drinking water. After 45 days, animals were sacrificed and hematological parameters were analyzed. Results: The current results showed that ASE may induce a promising therapeutic potential as regards hematological parameters in treated diabetic animals as compared to untreated diabetic ones. Conclusion: ASE administration showed therapeutic effect on the hematological parameters of treated diabetic mice. | ||||
