Abstract | ||||
Abstract The present investigate aims to study the reproductive cycle of striped piggy, Pomadasys stridens (Forsskal, 1775) in the Lake Timsah, Egypt. A total number of 54 fish samples were collected once monthly from January 2022 up to December 2022 and their length, weight, sex, gonad weight, and maturity status were recorded and so also size at the first sexual maturity. Based on microscopic and macroscopic examination of gonads, six developmental maturity stages were identified in both males and females. The result of present study demonstrated that, P. stridens characterized by prolonged spawning season starts in late March to reach maximum degree of maturity in June, and then begins to decrease. By examining sex ratio, it was found that females are somewhat more common than males in the population. The highest mean value of the gonado-somatic index (GSI) was recorded in June (6.55±1.18 and 7.8±2.01) for males and females, respectively. Nonetheless, the lowest GSI was documented in September (0.45±0.21 and 0.89±0.32) for males and females, respectively. The mean monthly values of gonado-somatic indices (GSI) indicated that the main spawning period of P. stridens in Lake Timsah, occurs once during spring and early summer. | ||||
