Abstract
Background: Tartrazine (TZ) is an artificial food coloring that falls under the category of azo dyes. TZ is approved for use as a food coloring in foods and cosmetics. However, it has detrimental effects on the liver. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most significant oil seed crops. Due to its high antioxidant content, sesame seeds and their delicious oil are considered a healthy food component. Aim of the work: to evaluate the effect of Prenatal Tartrazine toxicity and the Possible Protective role of Sesame Oil in Postnatal Development of the Liver of Albino Rats. Materials: 60 albino rats were used in the study were randomly divided into three groups with 20 offspring for each :1. control group .2. Tartrazine: mother’s receiving TZ (5 mg/kg/day) orally from the fifth day of the pregnancy.3. Sesame group: mothers receiving TZ (5 /kg/day) as mentioned before followed by oral administration of Sesame oil at a dose of 5 ml/kg body weight. The off springs were taken at one week and one month and sacrificed, their liver was taken and prepared for Haematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemical examination. Results: Rats received TZ showed histopathological changes in the form of dilated central veins and cytoplasmic vacuolation of cells. With immunohistochemical stains, TZ group showed high expression of genes. Most of these changes were diminished by sesame oil and rats showed near normal appearance. Conclusion: Tartrazine is a toxic substance; Sesame oil could ameliorate most of hazards done by TZ.
