Abstract | ||||
Background: Medial patellofemoral ligament insufficiency is a major cause of lateral patellar instability that if left untreated will adversely affect the patellofemoral joint function. Conservative treatment usually fails so, surgical treatment is recommended. Methods: Between March 2019 till March 2021, 12 patients with symptomatic lateral patellar instability due to isolated MPFL insufficiency were treated at our institute. There were 8 females and 4 males, the mean age of the patients was 19 years, all patients had more than 10 subluxation or dislocation episodes before surgery, the interval between first episode of dislocation and surgery was 12 months (average 6-36), the cause of dislocation was attributed to trauma in 4 patients while 8 patients reported a severe twisting knee injury. This study conducted a prospective analysis of the clinical outcome of isometric double-bundle MPFL reconstruction with hamstring autograft and fiber tape augmentation for isolated MPFL insufficiency and all patients were followed up for a minimum of 24 months. Patients were evaluated according to IKDC score, Kujala score, and Tegner scale. Results: According to the IKDC subjective knee evaluation score 10 patients were evaluated as normal (83.4%) while 2 patients were evaluated as nearly normal (16.6%). The mean Kujala score was 95.4 (range 86–100), and the median Tegner scale was 6.4 (range 3–6.7) and the median Lysholm score was 96.2 (range 84- 98). 83.4% of patients were very satisfied with the procedure while 16.6% were satisfied. Conclusion: Anatomic isometric double bundle MPFL reconstruction with FiberTape augmentation yields favorable functional results. | ||||
