Abstract | ||||
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that not only affects physical health but also exerts a profound impact on psychological well-being. The burden of managing daily blood glucose levels, dietary restrictions, medication adherence, and fear of complications can lead to significant emotional and psychological strain. Among the most common psychological disturbances associated with diabetes are depression, anxiety, and diabetes distress—a condition characterized by frustration, burnout, and emotional fatigue related specifically to diabetes self-management. Studies have shown that individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to experience depression compared to the general population. Psychological disturbances in diabetic patients can negatively influence glycemic control by reducing motivation, adherence to treatment regimens, and engagement in healthy lifestyle behaviors. Moreover, anxiety related to hypoglycemia or future health risks may further compromise quality of life and diabetes outcomes. Diabetes distress, while distinct from clinical depression, is prevalent and often underrecognized. It involves feelings of guilt, fear, or helplessness about living with diabetes and can lead to treatment non-compliance. Conclusion: The bidirectional relationship between diabetes and psychological health highlights the need for integrated care approaches that address both physical and mental health, ensuring better outcomes and improved quality of life for diabetic individuals. | ||||
