Abstract | ||||
Methotrexate (MTX) is a broadly used drug in the treatment of inflammatory conditions like arthritis, vasculitis, and crohn's disease and certain cancers. However, it has toxic effects that include renal toxicity, pulmonary toxicity, hematological toxicity, and hepatotoxicity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of MTX on the gastric fundus and the possible underlying mechanisms. Rats were distributed at random into two groups (n= 8 per group); control group and MTX group. Gastric fundus specimens were gathered for biochemical and histological changes. There was a decrease in total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC) level in MTX group. Also, there was a disturbance in the histological architecture in the form of gastric mucosal ulceration, cellular degeneration and vascular congestion. Regarding enteroendocrine cells, there was a reduced number of the granules in their cytoplasm in comparison to control group. In addition, an increase in the cleaved caspase-3 immuno-expression was also found in MTX group. | ||||
