Abstract | ||||
Background: Giardia lamblia is a zoonotic intestinal parasite worldwide spread, with a 2–30% prevalence rate among developing and industrialised countries. It is a global health problem and a common cause of giardiasis disease in humans and mammals and causes acute and chronic diarrhoea and gastrointestinal disturbances. Aim of the study: This study aimed to determine some haematological and biochemical parameters in patients with giardiasis and compare them with the control group. Methods: A total of 331 stool samples from the patients suffering from diarrhoea were examined in the Al-Diwaniyah, Afak general hospitals and private laboratories; 37 patients were confirmed as positive for giardiasis by General stool examination (GSE), and 24 healthy people as a control groups, 5 ml of venous blood were withdrawn for haematological tests (WBC, RBC, HB, PCV and PLT) and some biochemical tests (Zinc, Ferritin and C-Reactive Protein ). Results: The current study showed significant differences in the blood parameters of patients infected with the G. lamblia compared with the control group at the probability level of p≤0.0001. It showed an increase in the WBCs (11.10±0.30 cells/mm3) count compared to the control group (7.45±0.16 cells/mm3), while it indicated a decrease in the RBC, HB, PCV, and PLT counts ( 4.008±0.1 cells/mm3, 209.39±7.5 cells/mm3, 10.88±0.27 g/dl, 33.51±0.96%) compared to the control group(5.38±0.11 cells/mm3, 281.52±7.03 cells/mm3, 14.60±0.21 g/dl, 41.35±0.74%).The results of biochemical parameters also showed no significant differences in the levels of ferritin concentration was 81.56±10.11 mg /dl, compared with the control group(94.91±12.89 mg /dl), while there is a significant difference for the level of . Conclusions: The results of the current study recorded significant differences in some haematological and biochemical parameters in patients with Giardiasis at the probability of a significance level of p<0.0001. | ||||
