Abstract | ||||
Background: Patients on hemodialysis (HD) have a high prevalence of mucocutaneous changes because of several contributory factors, including uremia, metabolic disorders, dialysis, and side effects of immunosuppressive drugs. Uremic xerosis and pruritus are the most commonly occurring dermatological problems faced by most of patients on HD. The aim of this work was to delineate the demographic and clinical characteristics of xerosis, pruritus, and pallor among patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This observational study was carried out on 180 patients aged from 18 to 70 years old, both sexes, on regular HD with duration ranging from 3 months to 15 years. A comprehensive examination was conducted by a dermatovenereologist, and the findings were recorded. The documentation encompassed gender, age, employment status,as well as the clinical characteristics of xerosis,pruritus,and pallor.The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Results:The mean age of participants was 51.46±15.25 years.In terms of sex distribution,46.7% were male. Regarding laboratory parameters in relation to pallor, in the pallor group hemoglobin levels were significantly lower while urea and creatinine were significantly higher compared to those without pallor, in relation to xerosis, hemoglobin levels, electrolytes, sodium levels, parathyroid hormone, and triglycerides were significantly higher, while platelet count and HDL was significantly lower in the xerosis group compared to those without xerosis. Conclusions:Pruritus and xerosis are common symptoms in CKD patients with regular HD, with pallor characterized by low hemoglobin, triglycerides, and potassium levels,high urea and creatinine,and high hemoglobin,sodium,parathyroid hormone,and triglycerides, and increased dialysis duration. | ||||
