Abstract | ||||
The research works on the investigation of non-circular jets under both reactive and non-reactive conditions have been reviewed from the early stage of discovery until the most recent stage of development. The corresponding axis-switching phenomenon upon using non-circular jets and the resultant growth of the entrainment rates into the jet core have been explored. The non-circular cross-sections which are typically employed in the industrial engineering equipment for passive control have been classified into elliptical geometries and geometries with sharp corners. The relevant features of both geometries have been revealed and the favorable effects of the corresponding flow strain on the turbulence development and the augmentation of the combustion rates inside the industrial processing units, combustors and furnaces have been addressed. The discussion has been extended to the non-circular geometry effects on the combustion efficiency. The recent and future works have been highlighted in order to provide the potential for more research results. | ||||
