Abstract
Background: The anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) is a critical marker in functional endoscopic sinus operations. Aim: To assess the accuracy of identifying the anterior ethmoid artery on coronal computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses. Additionally, to investigate if there is an association between supraorbital ethmoid cells and the artery's vertical distance from the skull's base. Patients and methods: A prospective random sample of fifty patients (100 side) computed tomography was collected and analyzed. The anterior ethmoidal artery has been detected on coronal computed tomography using bone windows on both sides, and its individual distance from the base of the skull has been determined in millimeters. The bone canal of the anterior ethmoidal artery has been observed traversing the ethmoidal cavity. The computed tomography scans have been categorized into two groups: those that included supra-orbital cells and those that did not have supra-orbital cells. The study lasted for one year. Results: AEA was found in 96% of cases, with 16% within the base of the skull and 80% below it. Those with supraorbital cells had a higher distance from the base skull than those without. The AEA was not identifiable in 4% of cases. Conclusion: A significant relation exists between the vertical distance of the anterior ethmoidal artery from the skull's base and the presence of the supraorbital ethmoid cell. Therefore, the presence of the supraorbital ethmoid cell following operation increases the susceptibility of the artery to potential damage.
