Abstract | ||||
Purpose: Estimating the anticarcinogenic and synergistic effects of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and cisplatin on induced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was the goal of the current study. Material And Methods: Sixty-two Syrian male hamsters were divided into 7 groups GI: 6 hamsters were left untreated, GII: 6 healthy hamsters were received EVOO (1ml/100 g b.w. orally/day), GIII (oral cancer group):10 healthy hamsters were received DMBA 3 times weekly for 12 week, GIV: 10 healthy hamsters were received DMBA then treated with cisplatin (5mg/kg b.w.) from the 8th week until the 16week, GV: 10 healthy hamsters were received DMBA then treated with EVOO (1ml/100 g b.w. orally/day), GVI: 10 healthy hamsters were received DMBA and treated with EVOO and cisplatin (5mg/kg b.w.) and GVII: 10 healthy hamsters were received DMBA and treated with EVOO and cisplatin 2.5 mg/kg b.w. Results: Statistical analysis showed that highest mean value of caspase 3 expression was detected in group VI (50.33±5.89); followed by group VII (46.50±5.81); then group IV (40.68±8.91); followed by group V (34.73±8.93); then Group I normal control (14.17±3.87); followed by group II (13.02±1.17); and the lowest recorded value was detected in group III (7.00±1.42). ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference between all groups (P=0.001). Conclusion: EVOO is a promising anticarcinogenic agent that exhibits lower toxicity on healthy tissues and lower cancer cell resistance either by itself or in conjunction with cisplatin. | ||||
