Evaluation of the Effect of Ginger and Chlorhexidine as Mouthwashes on Streptococcus Mutans in Saliva in a Group of Egyptian Children | ||

| Abstract | ||
| Purpose: To assess the antibacterial effects of ginger extract against salivary streptococcus mutans in a group of Egyptian youngsters and contrast its results with those of chlorhexidine mouthwash. Subjects and Methods: The study involved 60 Egyptian children in total. Children ages ranged from (6 to 12) years old in a good physical condition. Children were randomly distributed into four groups, І, П, Ш (experimental groups) and ІV (control group) each consisted of 15 children. Children of group І, were told to rinse for one minute, three times each day for five days, with 10 ml (5% ginger extract). Children of Group П, were told to rinse for one minute, three times each day for five days, with 10 ml (10% ginger extract). Children in Group Ш, were told to rinse for one minute, three times each day for five days, with 10 ml (20% ginger extract). Children of Group ІV, were told to rinse for one minute, three times each day for five days, with 10 ml of chlorohexidine 0.12% mouth wash. Results: Streptococcus Mutans numbers decreased statistically significantly across all groups, however the chlorhexidine group experienced a marginally greater decline. Conclusions: Ginger extract mouthwash was successful as an antibacterial agent. It significantly reduced the salivary level of S.mutans in children when compared with a potent antimicrobial agent like 0.12% chlorohexidine. | ||
