Abstract | ||||
Field trials were carried out at the Training and Research Farm of Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University, Kano Nigeria and the National Horticultural Research Institute Sub-station at Bagauda During 2024 rainy season. The study evaluated the effect of intra row spacing on growth and yield of heat tolerant tomato varieties. The treatments consisted of five tomato varieties (Rio-Grande, Nihort-HT-1, UC82B, Nihort-HT-2 or Roma VF) and three intra row spacings (40, 50 or 60 cm). The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Intra row spacing was assigned to the main plot while varieties were assigned to sub-plot. There were significant (P < 0.05) differences among intra row spacings in total fruit yield hectare-1 at Bagauda. Varieties significantly (P < 0.05) differed in all the parameters. There was significant and positive correlation between total fruit yield per hectare and some growth and yield characters. There was significant interaction between varieties and intra row spacing on leaf temperature at vegetative growth stage and leaf chlorophyll content. Based on the results obtained in this study it could be concluded that the tomato variety Rio-Grande which is heat tolerant produced high total fruit yield and marketable yield under rainfed condition in comparison to other varieties that are heat susceptible (Roma VF and UC82B) and intra row spacing of 50 cm can be suggested for production of Rio-Grande and Roma VF during the rainy season in Kano and similar Agro-Ecological zone of the Gambia. | ||||
