Abstract | ||||
Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common joint replacement surgery to treat severe osteoarthritis. TKA patients usually suffer from postoperative pain and edema. Cryotherapy application is simple, low cost and effective method in reducing pain, inflammation and edema in patients with TKA Aim: evaluate the effect of cryotherapy application on reducing pain and edema following TKA. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used. Setting: The study was conducted in the Orthopedic Surgical Department at Beni-Suef University Hospital. Subjects: A purposive sample of (70) patients with TKA. Tools: Four tools were used for data collection: (1) Patient structured interview sheet (2) The American pain society patient outcome questionnaire (3) Numerical pain rating scale (4) Measurement of the knee Circumference. Results: This study showed that there was statistically significant difference before and after cryotherapy application in the study group, while no statistically significant difference were found in the control group regarding the pain and edema after TKA. Conclusion: The cryotherapy is an accessible, safe, cheap, and effective method in declining pain and edema after TKA which supported the study hypothesis. Recommendations: The cryotherapy application should be added in the protocol of nursing care after TKA. | ||||
