Abstract | ||||
Abstract Background: Electronic media have an increasingly influential role in daily life, particularly among students. Nursing students may be especially vulnerable to the adverse effects of electronic media overuse. Aim of study: to assess the effect of electronic media abuse on health status among nursing students. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Technical Nursing Institute at Heliopolis Hospital on 130 female nursing students. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on demographics, health habits, ownership and use of electronic media, and scales for attitudes and perceptions of electronic media health effects. Results: 94.6% of students had home internet, and 95.4% had smartphones. 66.2% had a negative attitude toward the internet and electronic media, and 23.1% had a high perception of their health effects. The scores of attitudes and perception of effects were negatively correlated. Age, number of media used, and regular school attendance were positive predictors of the attitude score, and the latter was a negative predictor of all health effects scores. Conclusion and Recommendations: Nursing students have mostly negative attitudes toward electronic media, with variable perceptions of their health effects. The study recommends adding a module on the health impacts of electronic media to nursing schools’ curricula, with seminars and student-led forums. Further research is needed to assess the changes in students’ attitudes and health perceptions after implementing educational interventions.
