Abstract | ||||
Background: Obesity is a major public health problem that has rapidly grown in the past 50 years globally. Patients with clinically suspicious arthralgia (CSA) may not have arthritis in certain conditions. The clinician could differentiate between arthritis and arthralgia by using APR. It has been displayed that obese adipose tissue has higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Aim: To evaluate the association between chemerin and IL6 in obese cases with/without clinically suspect arthralgia. Patients and Methods: This case control study had 3 groups; Obese CSA group (45 patients), Obese RA group (27 patients) and obese control group (45 individuals). Complete physical examinations included general examinations, vital signs and anthropometric measurements. Serum IL-6 and chemerin levels were evaluated. Results: The median ESR and CRP levels were highest in the obese rheumatoid arthritis (RA) group followed by the obese clinically suspect arthralgia group and lowest in the obese controls. RF was positive in 40% of obese clinically suspected arthralgia patients compared to 66.7% of obese RA patients. IL-6 levels and chemerin levels demonstrated highly statistically significant differences between the study groups. In the obese RA arthritis group IL-6 had a significant relationship with ESR and CRP. In the RA group, there was a statistically significant moderate positive relationship between serum chemerin and IL-6 levels. Conclusion: This study found that obese individuals with CSA and RA have elevated levels of both chemerin and IL-6 compared to obese controls, with the highest levels in RA patients. IL-6 was accompanied by disease activity in RA. | ||||
