Abstract | ||||
There are ways for speakers to express what they want in every language in the world, and it is important for learners to know how to address those they wish to communicate with, without causing discomfort to the other party. Given the significance of this matter in different communicative situations, 'politeness theories' have been established to frame how to speak in a polite manner. This study aims to explore the politeness strategies employed by the contemporary Turkish poet 'Melih Ziya Sezer' in selected samples of his poetry. The study adopts the strategies proposed by 'Brown and Levinson' as they are the most comprehensive. The study highlights the extent to which these strategies are present in the poetry of 'Melih Ziya Sezer', clarifying their impact on achieving communication and interaction. The research problem focuses on the investigation of the presence of politeness strategies proposed by 'Brown and Levinson' in the poetry of 'Melih ziya Sezer'. What are the most frequently addressed positive and negative politeness strategies in the poetry of 'Melih Ziya Sezer'? The study's approach is based on pragmatic theory. Although Turkish studies have addressed the theoretical basis of politeness strategies, none of them have examined politeness strategies in the poetry of 'Melih Ziya Sezer'. | ||||
