| Abstract | ||||
| Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has proven to be a safe procedure with multiple benefits to the patients while, there are several patients who have had a postoperative hospital stay of more than 24 hours. Aim of the study: This study was aimed to assess factors contributing to long hospital stay in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy through Assess patients’ related factors including demographic data and medical health history: Assess intra operative related factors. Assess postoperative related factors. Patients and Methods: Setting: The study was conducted in The National Liver Institute in Menoufia University, Department of Surgery. In fifth flour. The study subjects included 66 patients who attended previously mentioned-setting during 2022 and willing to participate in the study. A convenience sample, of all available patients who stay in the hospital for more than 24h. The study used two tools for data collection; the first was the factors contributing long hospital stay assessment including (Demographic characteristics and medical health history, pre-operative preparation related factors, and anesthetic technique related factors, surgical technique related factors, and post-operative treatment related factors), and second tool was Numerical pain rating scale (NRS) assessment: The score of patients categorized as no pain (0 score), mild pain (1-3), moderate pain (4- 6), severe pain (7- 10). Results: Duration of stay after surgery showed a significantly negative correlation between the studied patients' gender (p=0. 038) and marital status (p=0. 013) with highly significant positive correlation with the studied patients' preoperative preparation (p=0.007), pain scale (p=0.018), gallstones with previous cholangitis or pancreatitis (p=0.017), postoperative admission (p=0. 000), postoperative hemorrhage (p=0. 016), wound infection (p=0. 018) and fever (p=0. 031). Conclusion: At the end of this study, we conduct that, the factors that contributing long hospital stay in patient under going on laparoscopic cholecystectomy are preoperative preparation, gall stones with previous cholangitis or pancreatitis and post operative admission, postoperative hemorrhage wound infection and fever. Recommendations:- Continues assessment of patients before during and after LC by health care providers to identify risk factors of post LC complications. | ||||
